Five tabletop games you need to play

One thing many people don’t know about me is I really like tabletop games. I don’t get the chance to play them very often though, I am not very good at them but I like them nevertheless. So here are my top five tabletop games:

1. Dead of Winter

This game is my all time favourite. Dead of Winter is a zombie survival game that is a multi-tiered objective driven game. Not only do you have an overall objective for the colony, you also have your own secret objective, which could be something like ‘have five food items in your hand’ or you could be a traitor.

You also have to complete the objective before the game is over, either because the rounds have ended or the in-game morale hit zero. Also, each round you are faced with a crisis card that adds another layer of complexity. Highly recommend watching Will Wheaton’s Tabletop episode showing you how to play. It is also just really fun to watch.

2. Coup

Now Coup is a very simple card game, and is all about bluffing and taking out your competition. You have two lives and once you’re out, you’re out. So play smart, and be good at telling when people are bullshitting. Super easy and fun to play. Check out another of Will Wheaton’s Tabletop episodes. Skip to 19:36 to watch the Coup game.

3. Galaxy Truckers

Galaxy Trucker is a tile laying game that plays out over two phases: building and flying. The goal is to have the most credits at the end of the game. You can earn credits by delivering goods, defeating pirates, building an efficient ship, and being the furthest along the track at the end of the flying phase.

4. Caverna

Caverna is the first board game I played outside of scrabble and Monopoly and so I have a soft spot for this game. This is another tile laying game where you are a family of dwarves mining and farming to find resources, while building your home and your farm.

5. Betrayal at House on the Hill

This is a semi co-oprative game where you and the other players explore an old mansion room-by-room. Along the way you collect omens and items and can also trigger events: some are good, some are OK, but some are bad. When you or another player triggers the haunting, be careful, because the game starts moving fast and someone who was previously on your side is trying to kill you too. Yes, another Will Wheaton episode for you but it is so good, WATCH IT!!! WHAT THEM NOW!!!!
